2. Playing Outdoors: Pay attention to the weather conditions

The drum is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. In cold, humid conditions, the drumhead becomes loose, producing a dull sound. Heat and dryness tighten the drumhead, causing the tone to sound higher. Tips om je drum buiten te beschermen:

  • Use a drum bag:Protect your drum from temperature and moisture when not playing by keeping it in the bag.
  • Keep your drum warm:Keep the drum close to your body or under your jacket to maintain its temperature.
  • By a campfire:Warm your drum gently and slowly by briefly turning it toward the fire. Avoid direct heat to prevent damage.
  • On hot days: If your drum becomes too warm and sounds too high, lightly mist the drumhead with water. Do this sparingly; too much moisture will loosen the drumhead. Use a plant sprayer with a fine mist for best results.

Slow temperature changes: Prevent damage by allowing your drum to gradually acclimate to temperature changes.

3. Storage: Give your drum a safe place

Indoors, it is recommended to store your drum at a constant, comfortable temperature. Room temperature in a dry space is ideal. Avoid extreme heat, cold, or moisture.

Storage Tips:

  • Store your drum in a bag or wrap it in a blanket for extra protection.
  • Avoid places above a heater, direct sunlight, or in damp areas like a shed.
  • Choose a room where you feel comfortable, such as the living room or bedroom. If you feel good, your drum will feel good too.

4. Conditioning: Keep the drumhead in top condition

Play regularly on your drum. The natural oils from your skin help keep the drumhead hydrated. If the drumhead feels too dry, you can gently rub it with a natural oil, such as olive oil or shea butter.

How to care for the drumhead:

  1. Apply a small amount of oil to a soft cloth.
  2. Gently rub it over the drumhead.

Do this only if the drumhead is really dry, usually just once a year.

5. Treat your drum with respect

Give your drum care and attention. Don't use the drum as a table or tray, and avoid placing it with the drumhead facing down on rough surfaces. Avoid contact with sharp objects and give your drum the loving care it deserves.

When you treat your drum with respect, the instrument will reward you with beautiful sounds and energy. It will not just be a drum, but a source of joy, connection, and inspiration.

With the right care and attention, your shaman drum will remain a loyal companion on your musical and spiritual journey.
